European public service media unveil YEP news aggregator
18 December 2024Ten of Europe’s leading public service media organizations have beta launched Your European Perspective (YEP), a cutting-edge news aggregator designed to deliver trusted, multilingual reporting on key European and global issues.
Available in English, French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese, YEP curates top stories from our network of public broadcasters, offering multiple viewpoints and in-depth context on major European and global issues. With AI-powered translation technology, the platform bridges language barriers to make diverse perspectives accessible to all.
The beta launch positions YEP as a direct response to the growing distrust in online news. By focusing on reliable content from public service media, YEP seeks to empower audiences—particularly younger generations—with credible information and nuanced reporting.
YEP also highlights regional solutions to shared challenges, aiming to strengthen a common European public sphere by spotlighting stories from across borders. With its test version now live, YEP promises to set a new standard for collaborative, trustworthy journalism in Europe.
Wouter Gekiere, AISBL EBU-UER Managing Director, comments: “The issues that people care about don’t stop at borders. In uncertain times, the need for trusted media is stronger than ever and Public Service Media is uniquely positioned to bridge that gap. Through YEP people will have access to the stories they want, in the language that they want. We hope to contribute through this innovative aggregator to building a healthier media ecosystem.”
Shifts in news consumption behaviour
Recent, global research (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism | Digital News Report 2024) shows that across markets, only around a fifth of respondents (22%) identify news websites or apps as their main source of online news (a reduction of 10 percentage points since 2018). Instead, they are more likely to turn to platforms including social media, search, or aggregators as their main gateway to online news. YEP seeks to meet this demand from audiences: news they can trust in a format that they want.
Liz Corbin, EBU’s Director of News, adds:
“YEP is unique in its offer both to news organizations and to audiences. It brings publishers’ stories to audiences beyond their borders, sharing perspectives and helping bring a better understanding of Europe and the world. All whilst being at the vanguard of testing state-of-the-art technology – such as AI. We’re excited to find out what audiences make of YEP and the opportunity it offers to navigate today’s often-crowded media landscape.”
Asun Gomez-Bueno, RTVE (Spain) and Vice-Chair of the EBU’s News Committee, says:
“We are thrilled to today launch a space, freely accessible to the general public, in which exploring issues from different perspectives and in different languages has never been so easy. With this live, testing version of YEP we will find out from audiences directly what they want from an aggregator and be able to adjust our offer accordingly.”
