A European Perspective Reaches Significant Milestone: 50,000th Article Published

25 October 2024

This week, A European Perspective’s Digital News Platform celebrates a significant milestone, with the publication of its 50,000th story. This story, initially published by Česká televize, was republished by Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne. It shines a spotlight on Moscow's plan to "ban the promotion of childlessness".

Over the past three and a half years, A European Perspective (AEP), has brought together 20 of EBU’s members to contribute to and republish from a curated network newsroom. AEP’s Digital News Platform allows editors across Europe to choose stories, from a selection of the best of trusted journalism from across the continent – informing audiences and sharing perspectives.

The 50,000th AEP Story

On 18 October, CT reported on how Russia wants "to ban the promotion of life without children. The new law passed its first reading in the local parliament. This is yet another measure by which the Russian authorities want to reverse the unfavorable trend of falling birth rates".

Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne republished the story on their website. Franceinfo in France, GPB in Georgia and Der Bayerische Rundfunk in Germany also brought language versions of the article to their audiences.  "I congratulate the entire AEP team on reaching the 50K mark! This is a great effort by each and every member of our networked newsroom. I am also grateful to Martin Štěrba, who contributed this article from Česká televize. We have created our own journalistic community, and I wish us only further development and new collaborations!" - Alina Tvardovska, Suspilne's editor for A European Perspective.

An Exchange For Reliable News

Launched in 2021, AEP’s online exchange for reliable news breaks down language barriers and gives news organisations access to news stories from around Europe which they then republish them in their own language with the help of AI. Since 2021:

  • More than 40 stories per day have been contributed to AEP’s digital news platform, resulting in more than 60 publications daily.
  • Currently, those stories are being published in over 50 widgets on participating news organisations' websites.
  • AEP has garnered 14,4 million reads since its inception in 2021.

“It’s so thrilling to reach this huge milestone for A European Perspective! The 50,000 stories published are testament to the quality of the journalism and the selection of stories which paint a picture of the lives of other Europeans – opening a window on their world, whilst allowing us to reflect on our common experience. EBU members have clearly seen an appetite for the kind of stories shared through AEP, which resonate with their audiences.” - Alexiane Lerouge, editorial lead of the project.
