ERT Joins A European Perspective

27 November 2024

As the year draws to an end, A European Perspective (AEP) is delighted to welcome a new member: Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation – ERT (Greece). ERT joins the 19 other participating members to AEP’s successful Digital News Platform.

On ERT News’ website you can now find news stories from A European Perspective, featuring articles from participating public service media from across Europe. It has already featured 26 stories from other AEP participants, including a story from EBU’s Irish member, RTE, about why Irish undersea cables can be seen as military targets, a report by RTVE in Spain about how the town of Seville regulates tourism and one piece from the Bavarian broadcaster BR about euthanasia being a "legal grey area" in Germany. And news from ERT has already reached different parts of Europe. For example, an article about reviving the practice of terracing on the Greek island of Paros to tackle water scarcity and help prevent flooding, has already been republished in Germany, Latvia and Ireland.

Launched in 2021, AEP’s online exchange for reliable news breaks down language barriers and gives news organisations access to news stories from around Europe which they then republish in their own language with the help of AI. This year, the number of publications of news stories through AEP has already crossed the 20,000 threshold (more than 60 publications a day), a net increase compared to 2023 (18,433 publications). Since AEP's launch in 2021, those stories have already reached more than 14.8 million readers.

Tasos Economou, ERT News Digital Director, comments: “We are so proud to be part of A European Perspective.  For ERT, this cooperation is of great importance, and we will take all the necessary steps to achieve the greatest possible impact.  From my point of view, A European Perspective is strategically significant for Public Service Media to stay relevant in the news landscape of the future, which will change so dramatically in the years to come.  Furthermore, A European Perspective is a means of strengthening our innovation efforts and it gives us the opportunity to build bridges with its other members.”

Wouter Gekiere, AISBL EBU-UER Managing Director, says: “We are delighted to welcome ERT to the AEP family. ERT have been a valuable EBU member since its foundation and it means a great deal that they will now participate in this important project, which enriches the European media sphere through the sharing of news that resonates across Europe.  It also means that AEP now features in Greek that makes the AEP offer available now in 14 languages.”

Alexiane Lerouge, AEP’s Editorial Lead, comments: “ERT’s participation in A European Perspective brings our offer to a new and important corner of Europe. It’s amazing to see our participants’ news stories in Greek, connecting with a brand new audience. We’re also excited to see great reports from ERT’s journalists adding a valuable Greek perspective on pan-European topics to our network newsroom!”.

A European Perspective will soon launch new, innovative offers including, in the coming months, cross-border stories, where journalists from participating newsrooms collaborate on societal issues that resonate across the continent.
