A European Perspective: the next phase

18 October 2024

What is A European Perspective?

A European Perspective (AEP) brings audiences across Europe stories that matter from trusted public service media, translated into their own language. AEP – by harnessing cutting–edge technology, hand-in-hand with editor oversight – offers people news from other corners of Europe that they would not have access to without AEP.

The current, established and successful offering of AEP is the Digital News Platform. Launched in 2021, it is an online exchange for reliable news. Editors across Europe choose stories from a curated selection of the best trusted journalism from across the continent and republish them in their own language with the help of AI.

Coming soon: expanding the AEP offer

AEP will soon launch cross-border, collaborative stories, where journalists from participating newsrooms, across Europe, work together to develop stories on societal issues that resonate across the continent.

AEP has received funding from the European Commission to develop new ways to disseminate trusted, quality news across Europe. It will launch a “news aggregator”, acting as a pan-European gateway which will share news that matters from across Europe.

Via the innovative use of AI, it will break down language barriers so that audiences can access news from different corners of the continent, in their own languages. To further the development of a European Public Sphere where transparent algorithms and AI tools ensure the integrity, resonance and relevance of content, the project will also test a “Public Service Algorithm” that helps editors to curate content by considering its public service rating as well as a “Constructive Algorithm” that aims to surface solutions-based stories.

What is the aim of the project?

AEP aims, through the sharing of quality, trusted journalism in a pan-European project, to contribute to a European public sphere and a healthier media ecosystem. It offers news organisations the opportunity to bring their stories to audiences beyond their borders and to be at the vanguard of testing state-of-the-art technology – such as AI – which is having, and will continue to have, a significant impact on the news industry.

It builds on the already well established and successful AEP Digital News Platform and continues the work of opening a window on the lives of our fellow Europeans, highlighting our common European experience and values. Through working with trusted news organisations and only disseminating quality news, it can act as a counter to disinformation.
