AI-assisted news production and curation in the spotlight at editors’ workshop

04 April 2025

A European Perspective (AEP) editors from across the continent met last week in Aarhus, Denmark, for a workshop on AI-assisted news curation and cross-border reports.

Hosted by AEP member, the Constructive Institute at the University of Aarhus, the two-day workshop was a chance to discuss the opportunities that large language models offer to support quality journalism.  The group of 20 journalists heard from those already deploying AI in their day-to-day work and discussed the pitfalls and advantages that large language models can bring.

A European Perspective is at the forefront of innovating with AI in news and the workshop allowed the team to consult editors for the development of a Public Service Algorithm (PSA) for AEP’s Digital News Platforms. The PSA will be used to assist in curating news stories with the highest public service values and will find its first application in AEP’s news aggregator, YEP News. Its goal is to bring to the fore stories which fulfil the following criteria: have cross-border relevance, are forward looking, bring diverse voices and offer in-depth analysis.

The workshop was also the occasion to kickstart the production of A European Perspective’s next collaborative stories.

Alexiane Lerouge, A European Perspective’s Editorial Lead, comments: “The progress we’ve made on our Public Service Algorithm and collaborative reports, just brainstorming in person, is quite extraordinary. We are all used to working together everyday as a decentralized networked newsroom, but there’s something about face-to-face discussions that bring a whole new energy. Ideas just kept coming, now it’s about making them come to life.”
