YEP News: A Trusted News Website from European Public Service Media

11 mars 2025

YEP News, launched today, is a groundbreaking multi-lingual news website that delivers trusted news from European public service media. It aims to curate insightful journalism and guide audiences through today’s fragmented media landscape.

YEP (Your European Perspective) News builds on the success of A European Perspective, a pan-European networked newsroom that collects nearly 3,000 stories daily. YEP News features a selection of these stories, helping them to find a wider audience. It further translates them into five major European languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. It harnesses the power of AI, used alongside human oversight, to curate stories that appear on YEP News. The huge recent leaps in the accuracy and speed of AI translation mean that YEP News can bring large quantities of stories to new audiences in their language of choice.

Wouter Gekiere, AISBL EBU-UER Managing Director, says:

“YEP News helps us see the world - and our shared challenges - through a fresh lens. Often, solutions lie just across the border. By breaking down borders and language barriers, YEP News serves as a hub for reliable information, powered by cutting-edge technology.”

Tackling Misinformation with Trusted Journalism

As distrust in online news grows and audiences concerns about distinguishing real from false news rise (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s Digital News Report 2024), YEP News offers a solution. By focusing on reliable content from public service media, it empowers audiences, especially young people, with credible, nuanced reporting. YEP News leverages the strong reputation of public service media, recognized as Europe’s most trusted news source (EBU report, 2024).

Eric Scherer, France Télévisions and Chair of the EBU’s News Committee, adds:

“YEP News is a unique media collaboration that brings our stories to more people across Europe. Finding new audiences for public service media’s quality journalism, whilst providing them context and nuance on pan-European issues is a win-win for both media organizations and online audiences.”

Asun Gomez-Bueno, RTVE (Spain) EBU’s News Committee member and co-chair of the AEP Core Working Group, states:

“In a world where information is abundant but fragmented, YEP News offers a centralized platform with fresh perspectives on European and global topics. We’re proud to bring European public service media together to help build a common European public sphere.”

Adapting to Changing News Consumption Habits

Global research (Digital News Report 2024) reveals a shift in how audiences consume news. Only 22% of respondents identify news websites or apps as their primary online news source - down 10 percentage points since 2018. Instead, they turn to social media, search engines, or aggregators. YEP News addresses this trend by offering trusted news in formats audiences prefer.

Liz Corbin, EBU’s Director of News, says:

“Public service media organizations are 100% focused on making sure the news you need to know reaches as many people as possible. YEP News sits at the cutting edge of this – bringing journalism and technology together to help audiences use and benefit from AI-driven tools in a safe environment. By uniting trusted news sources, YEP News is responding to the public’s demand to have easy access to different perspectives and to get maximum value from the media organizations they help fund. In a complex media ecosystem, YEP News just made getting the real story a little bit easier.”
